Leburg Electronic Ignition for Light Aircraft

·     Sadly, David Mickleburgh died suddenly whilst flying in February 2009. He is sorely missed by all of his family and friends.

Due to overwhelming support, advice and interest from the light aviation community, the Leburg system is being continued by his son, Henry.

As of September 2009, internally mounted Leburg controllers will no longer be available. All new kits will be externally mounted controllers and associated hardware.

·     September 09 - Henry is visiting La Baule in France to investigate whether the Leburg system can be used to provide dual ignition for the Columban MC15 Cri Cri. This is an exciting development for a particularly exciting aircraft!

Well, I'm back from La Baule and my brief time with the Cri Cri. They really are cute little planes. Each Cri Cri has a couple of JPX PUL 212 2 stroke engines of around 15hp.

Here are the twin plugs:

Rear view showing small alternator (with 2 of these we should be have useful charging) note stereotypical Frenchman to rear of frame.

These engines vibrate like crazy and are mounted in 'floating' cradles to offset the vibration transmitted to airframe.  In the current set up there are 2 ignition coils which are bolted to the engines, sitting in the breeze and vibrating like crazy which isn't ideal.

The plan is to remove all of the existing ignition system, then mount an external leburg pick up sensor to the alternator rotor timing magnet. Once the existing kit is removed from the nose area, there should be enough space to mount twin controllers and suitably sized twin output ignition coils, such as CBR 600 coils. It's unlikely that the Ford coils will fit in there!

With a couple of controllers, the installation should be significantly tidier. Only pick up and twin HT leads would need to run externally. The pick up sensor will happily put up with any vibration as it is encapsulated in resin, inside its aluminium tube.

So, I'm going to send an extra long pick up sensor and blank controller boxes to La Baule with specs etc.  The crazy Frenchmen (and let's be honest, if you are (a) French and (b) fly a Cri-Cri, then this is a pretty literal description) will make up a few brackets to see if they can fit it all in. Once it fits, we can reprogram a suitable ignition curve to suit the higher revving 2 stroke engine and send out some real controllers.

Watch this space!
